TAO OF WARREN BUFFET # 21

With each investment you make you should have the courage and conviction to place at least 10% of your net worth in that stock.

Conviction is based on what you know will happen, faith is based on what you hope will happen. To make money in the investment game you need to have conviction, which means that you need to know what you are doing.A surefire way to achieve Warrens level of conviction is to invest significant amounts of money.Thiis causes you to focus and make certain that you have done your homework before you make your investment .But if your investment strategy is based on faith, then you really haven't a prayer.

You should invest in a business that even a fool can run.because someday a fool will.

There are business with great underlying economics and business with poor underlying economics. You want to invest in companies with great underlying economics because it is hard to damage this kind of business.Companies in which Warren has invested ,such as CocaCola,Budweiser,Walmart,Wrigley's,Hershey, and H&R Block, are almost dumbproof. You know you are going to make money with these business, even if a fool becomes a CEO.But if you have to worry about a fool running the business, then maybe it is'nt such a great business, and maybe you shouldn't be in it.

Recycled Clothing Art by Guerra De La Paz

The Cuban-born artist duo Guerro De La Paz have created a series of sculptural art works out of discarded, recycled clothing.  These figures of sculptural iconography are made from t-shirts, shoes, boots, socks and more, many of which have been dug out of secondhand stores in Little Haiti, Miami.  The message Guerro De La Paz conveys with their recycled clothing art is about the consume-and-discard nature of our mass-produced lifestyles.  Our habits of consumption put us so very far away from the creation of the items we use– and just as far away from the piles of trash they become.  Guerra De La Paz doesn’t see trash, in this sense, but an opportunity for artistic beauty and expression.   [guerra de la paz via mymodernmet]

If i cant make money in a $5 trillion U.S market ,it may be a little bit of wishful thinking to think that all i have to do is get a few thousand miles offshore and I'll start showing my stuff.

The old thing about this quote is that ten years later Warren did go offshore to show his stuff. In 2003 he bought around $500 million worth of PetroChina,an oil company that is 90% owned by Chinese government, which means ,as Warren jokingly remarked , 'Between the two of us we own the company'. PetroChina is the fourth most profitable oil company in the world.it produces a much crude as Exxon, and Warren bought it at one-third the valuation of Western oil companies. In case you are wondering ,it is up 400% since then. And if that's not showing your stuff,I dont know what is.

Sir Donald Bradman

[caption id="attachment_1064" align="aligncenter" width="205" caption="Sir Donald Bradman"]Sir Donald Bradman[/caption]

Sir Donald Bradman is the greatest batsman ever to grace the game. His test average remains far above anyone else. In 52 tests he managed 29 hundreds and scored just below 6,000 runs at an average of 99.94. If he had scored 6 runs on his last test innings at Lords, he would have finished with an average of 100. However, the greatest cricketer of the era was out for a duck - a paradoxical end to a stupendous career. Donald Bradman was so dominant that the English team resorted to 'bodyline' bowling on the Australian tour of 1933. It was in the era of the great depression, when cricket provided a relief from the gloom of the Great Depression. The Australians were up in arms at the 'uncricket' like nature of the English bowling. The tactics were criticised back in England and were even raised in parliament. Don Bradman finished the series with an average of 'only' 53. If it had not been for the second world war, Don Bradman's career would have been even more amazing.

After retirement Sir Donald Bradman remained a great ambassodor for the sport. He was knighted for his services to cricket and remained open to an adoring public, even though he remained publicity shy throughout the period.

Sachin Tendulkar

[caption id="attachment_1061" align="aligncenter" width="288" caption="Sachin Tendulkar"]Sachin Tendulkar[/caption]

Sachin Tendulkar has played a key role in Indian test cricket ever since his debut at an early age in 1992. A child cricket prodigy who has lived up to his early promise.

He has played many flawless innings and led India to many notable victories, not least over arch rivals and the number 1 test side - Australia in 2008.

Sometimes Tendulkar has been criticised for making runs against easy opposition and not rising to the big occassion. But, that criticism is not entirely fair and Tendulkar has recently made some key hundreds in the most testing of situations.

Sachin Tendulkar was the first non-Yorkhireman born player to play for the county. It was a key moment for Yorkshire CC. Unfortunately, it was not an unreserved success as his dominant form deserted him.

He currently has over 11,000 Test runs making him one of the higest test run scorers of all time.

In India Sachin Tendulkar receives huge adolation befitting a top cricket player. At times the adulation can switch to intense scrutiny as the Indians desperately seek greater success in the international era.

[caption id="attachment_1044" align="aligncenter" width="199" caption="Standing Alone"]Standing Alone[/caption]

My idea of group decision is looking in the mirror.

Warren is not one to seek affirmation of his ideas from others, because so many of his ideas are the opposite of what the herd is thinking. To make big money in  the investment world you have to learn to think independently , to think independently you need to be comfortable standing alone.

Warren has a history of standing alone that dates back to the early days of his investment career. He chose to live in Omaha instead of NYC because there was less influence from Wall street. He bought into Berkshire Hathway when no one wanted it , he bought into American Express when no one wanted it, he bought into the Washington Post Company when no one wanted it.he bought into General Foods when on one wanted it, he bought into RJR Tobacco when no one wanted it, he bought into GEICO when noone wanted it, he bought the bonds of the Washington Public Power Supply System when noone wanted them, and he bought into junk foods when noone wanted them,Some of this investments he still owns, some of them he sold after holding them for a number of years, but on each and every one of them he made a fortune.

If he had taken a vote of confidence from anyone on the Wall street he would have missed the boat on all these great investments.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="625" caption="Small Business"]Small Business[/caption]

You should look at stocks as small pieces of business.

Sometimes when people invest they forget that they are actually buying a fractional interest in a business.Warren likes to look at stocks as owning a small piece of business. This way he can judge whether he is paying too much for the business. He multiplies the stock price by the number of shares outstanding, then he asks him-selves whether this would be a good deal or bad deal if he were buying the whole business. If the price is too rich to be buying the whole business that the price is too rich for even buying a single share. This thought alone can stop you from foolishly getting caught in the speculative frenzy that often goes with the bull market, for seldom do Wall-street darlings and other fashionable securities sell at prices at which it would make sense to buy the whole business.

35 Truly Dramatic Examples of Animal Photography

Sometimes we take wildlife pictures that we see in books and magazines for granted; seldom does it give you the impressions that they were taken easily. The truth is, photographing animals (especially in wildlife) is very involved, such a moment could only be told through some timely amazing shots. For someone who loves animals, photographing them can be both very fulfilling and frustrating at the same time. Excellent animal photography requires experience, knowledge and patience.

Animals can make very eye catching subjects to photograph in wild. Taking wildlife photography in a place where the animals don’t fear humans makes your task a bit difficult. In their natural environment, animals often provide many opportunities for taking dramatic shots. Let’s now take a look at some of these dramatic images of animal photography to see emotions in the wild nature.

It is not necessary to do extraordinary things to get extraordinary results.

As an investor you don't have to try to get rich overnight to eventually get rich.Warren is shooting for a 20% annual rate of return, not a 200% annual rate of return. Invest $100,000 for twenty years at 20% a year and you end up with $3.8 million ;hold it for thirty years and you end up with $23.7 million. You win with the running game - not the long bomb. With the world trying to get an annual return of 100%, a lot of mistakes are being made regarding long-term business economics that make getting a 20% annual return pretty easy.

7 Must Read Lessons from Muhammad Ali

Born Cassius Clay, Muhammad Ali is widely considered one of the greatest heavyweight championship boxers of all time.  As an amateur boxer he won a gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.  After becoming a professional boxer he became the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship three times.

Muhammad Ali refused to be inducted into the U.S. military based on religious beliefs and his opposition to the Vietnam War.  Because of this he was arrested and found guilty on charges of draft evasion.  He was stripped of his boxing title, license and he was suspended from boxing.  However, Ali never went to jail, his appeal went all the way to the Supreme Court (Clay vs. United States) where his conviction was overturned.

Ali, nicknamed “The Greatest,” was involved in several historical fights, including three with Joe Frazier and one with George Foreman.  In his career he amassed 56 wins and only 5 losses.  Ali’s success, fighting style (floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee), “trash talking,” and idioms made him a cultural icon.

In 1999, Ali was crowned “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated and “Sports Personality of the Century” by the BBC.

7 Must Read Lessons from Muhammad Ali:

1. Suffer Now

I run on the road, long before I dance under the lights.  I hated every minute of training, but I said, ”Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”

Suffer now, pay the price now, though the price is high, it’s worth it.  In the end, the price of success will be far less than the price of failure, and you will have made a good bargain.

Over the long-term it cost you less to succeed, than it does to fail, so pay the price now and live the rest of your life as a champion.

2. Desire, Dream, Visualize

“Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them — a desire, a dream, a vision.”

Do you have a burning desire to succeed?  Does it keep you up at night, does it wake you up in the morning.  Champions are driven to succeed, they have an inner picture of success, they’re determined to see that picture realized.

Champions never stop until their goal is achieved, they can’t stop, they’re on a mission.

3. Affirm Yourself

“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.  Nobody can beat, Mohammad Ali!”

Ali said, “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.”  So don’t wait for someone to affirm you, affirm yourself!  Ali did this all the time, Ali said, “If you even dream of beating me you’d better wake up and apologize.”  He said, “I’m the greatest of all time.”  He said “It’s hard to be humble, when you’re as great as I am.”  Try saying that one a few times!

I know humility is important, but go ahead and say that last statement a few more times and see how you feel.  Say, “It’s hard to be humble, when you’re as great as I am.”  Say it again!

4. Change

“A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.”

You’re supposed to change?  “Change” often times gets a bad reputation,  …if you see someone you hadn’t seen in a year, they should say, “you changed” and you should say, “thank you.”  Life is about change, about growth; it’s about taking risk and becoming more.  Ali said, “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.”

5. Use Your Wings

“The man who has no imagination has no wings.”

A bird that doesn’t use its wings won’t make it very far.  We humans have wings as well, it’s our imagination.  We have the ability to leave the mundane and soar into a world of possibilities, a world without limits.  If we believe what we see in that world, if we become pregnant with a vision from that world, then that vision will be born in this world.

6. Goals are Everything

“What keeps me going is goals.”

What keeps you going are goals too?  Have goals, know your goals, you should be able to quote your goals upon arising in the morning, and you should visualize them before laying your head down at night.  Goals are everything, you need them, and you need a plan to guide you to them.  Never underestimate the necessity of goals, they keep you going.

7. Prepare to Succeed

“The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.”

You don’t succeed when your dream is accomplished…you are succeeding or failing right now.  Your daily habits will determine how far you go, it’s not about the “lights,” it’s about how you prepare for the “lights.”  Are you preparing, are you pushing through, are you getting ready for the lights!

Marrying for money is probably a bad idea under any circumstances.but is absolutely nuts if you are already rich.

The wise know that if you marry for money ,you will earn every penny for it.

So if you are already rich ,why on earth would you want to work that hard! It is easier to marry for love and make the money later. It is what Warren did with his wife ,Susie- then found love and then they went out to make a fortune.Besides, the couple that makes money together is often the couple that stays together. And if they don't stay together ,at least they have a ton of money to fight over.[Warren is silent on the wisdom of divorce].

10 Truly Awful Ways To Be Killed By An Animal

Electrocution

Electric eel

Electric-Eel

Electric eels are elongated, fresh water fish, native to the Amazon and Orinoco rivers in South America. They are not really eels, but a kind of knifefish (and related to catfish). They are among the deadliest denizens of the South American rivers. It has not one, but three specialized organs to produce electric currents strong enough (600 volts, sometimes more) to stun or kill an adult human. It is believed that many “unexplained” disappearances of people while swimming in the Amazon and Orinoco rivers, could be due to them being stunned by an electric eel and drowning, or even, dying because of the eel’s discharge itself. Many of these deaths are often blamed on attacks by predatory animals such as piranha or caiman.

The electric eel doesn’t eat human beings; it feeds on smaller fish, crabs and small mammals. It only attacks in self defense, and handling an electric eel or even entering the water wherever these fish are common should be avoided at all costs.

Constriction

Python, anaconda

Anaconda

Pythons and boas (anacondas being a kind of boa) are not venomous. They have very sharp teeth to hold on to their prey, but they rely on constriction for the actual kill. This means, they coil around the victim (once they have secured it with their teeth) and squeeze so that the unfortunate animal doesn’t have any space to breathe. Every time the victim tries to inhale, the snake squeezes harder. This deadly “hug” is so powerful that even blood can’t flow. As a matter of fact, death comes usually because of cardiac arrest/stroke, and not asphyxia as was once believed.

Although some smaller snakes (such as king snakes and gopher snakes) use constriction to kill prey, pythons and anacondas are the best known constrictors, and the scariest, too, since these cold-blooded predators have been known to kill and eat humans once in a while.

Description:
What if you watch a film and whenever you pause it, you face a painting? This idea inspired Reza Dolatabadi to make Khoda. Over 6000 paintings were painstakingly produced during two years to create a five minutes film that would meet high personal standards. Khoda is a psychological thriller; a student project which was seen as a ‘mission impossible’ by many people but eventually proved possible!

TAO OF WARREN BUFFET # 14 .

[caption id="attachment_974" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Chains of habit"]Chains of habit[/caption]

The chains of habit are too light to be felt and too heavy to be broken.

This is warren quoting the English philosopher Bertrand Russel, because his words so aptly describe the insidious nature of bad business habits that don't become apparent until it is too late .Such as cost cutting after your business is in trouble, which should've been done long before you even got to the doorsteps of danger. The business that becomes bloated with unnecessary expenses in times of plenty is the business that will sink when things turns for the worse.

This propensity to delude oneself also tells you a lot about the management that let the business become bloated with expenses in the first place. It is the best to consciously check where all your habits are taking you long before you get there. If you don't like the direction where you are headed, the time to change course is before you find your ship sinking in the sea of troubles.

This is what happened to Warren with the Benjamin Graham inspired investment strategy of buying bargain stocks that were selling below book value regardless of the nature of the company's long-term economics. This was something Warren was able to do with great success during the 1950's and early 1960's .But he stayed with this approach long after it wasn't viable anymore-the chains of habit were too light to be felt. When he finally woke up in the late 1970's to the fact that Graham bargain ride was over he shifted over to a strategy of buying exceptional business at reasonable prices and then holding them for long periods- thereby letting the business grow in value. With the old strategy he made millions with the new he made billions.

Inventions That Changed the World

Fire

Fire was a key invention which enabled man to make a decisive step from the animal kingdom. With fire, man could cook his food and make survival in cold climates more amenable.

Wheel.

No one can remember when the wheel was invented. But, it is the wheel which enabled the first primitive carts and other forms of transport. It is one of those key inventions which set apart man from the animal world.

Boat

The boat enabled man to travel across the seas and inhabit new lands.

Paper.

The first parchments of dried bark enabled the development of reading, writing, culture and literature.

Printing Press.

Before the arrival of the printing press, documents were manually written out by scribes. This ensured that books and literature were kept the preserve of a small class of educated people. It left the mass of common man without access to any written material. The printing press revolutionised the world as it facilitated the spread of books, newspapers and knowledge to all.

Steam Engine.

The steam engine was at the heart of the industrial revolution which revolutionised the world. The steam engine made travel much quicker and more reliable. Before it could take several months to cross the atlantic, but, with steam power, the crossing could be made in days. Steam also enabled train travel to be much quicker and eased the transport of raw materials enabling a rapid rise in living standards. The steam engine was patented by Scottish inventor James Watt (1736–1819). He was the first inventor to use a condensor to peform the action of pushing the piston. Though other inventors such as Englishman Thomas Newcomen (1663–1729) played a role in the development of the steam engine. George Stephenson played a key role in producing the first commercially used steam trains.

Electricity

Knowledge about electricity had existed for many years. For example, Benjamin Franklin was able to show lightening created electric charge. But, it was not until the ninenteenth century that electricity could be controlled and made available for domestic use. A key element in the development of electricity was the invention of an electro magnetic rotation model by Michael Faraday in 1821. This enabled a constant production of electricity.

The Internal Combustion Engine.

The steam engine was great for large vehicles like a train, but, impractical for small vehicles. The internal petrol engine, was the key invention behind making the motor car a reality.

Aeroplane

For centuries man had dreamed of flight. Yet, a heavier than air machine, had seemed nothing more than a dream. Finally, in 1901 the Wright brothers succeeded in achieving the first powered air flight. Though their short journey was quite modest within two decades, advances in airflight had led to a significant expansion in air flights. Air travel has done more than anything to make international travel easier, effectively reducing the time between destinations. It has facilitated the process of globalisation and international travel. Aircraft have also transformed war, with the advent of aircraft the bombing of civilian areas has been used to devastating effect.

Penicillin

Penicillin was discovered in 1928, almost by accident. It occurred in the laborartory of Alexander Fleming, a physician at St Mary's Hostpial in london.

One of his petri dish's was left exposed by an assistant. This allowed mould to grow on the bacteria culture. The interesting thing is that Fleming noticed the mould which had grown then created a bacteria free area around it. It seemed that mould had a natural anti bacterial property.

In the late 1930s, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain at Oxford University took up his research and were able to produce purified penicillin which opened up the door to mass production of penicillin. The drug was widely used in World War II and helped to lead to lower fatal casualty rates. The only problem is that the widespread use of penicillin has caused some super bugs to be immune from it. But, penicillin has saved the lives of many since its invention.

Atomic Energy.

The splitting of the atom, revolutionised the world. The power of atomic energy has the potential to meet our energy needs in a world of declining oil reserves. Yet, at the same time atomic energy has the capacity to destroy the world, as the world saw to devastating effect in Hiroshima and Negasaki. A key moment in the development of atomic energy was the isolation of Plutonium in 1941. A team of scientists led by Glenn Seaborf bombarded Uranium with nuclear particles to produce a new element they termed plutomium. From plutonium they developed the isotpoe plutonium 239 which turned out to be highly fissionable - means produced a tremendous amount of energy.
